The bars( or lines of the fiber) of silk top are very close to each other, you even can not see holes on the lace. It is normally used to cover the knots, the hair strands would be pulled out from silk top to get that grow out of scalp look. Silk top is made with at least 2 layers of fibers, so it is not as breathable as other types of lace.
